Western Norway Research Institute (WNRI) is an applied research institute located in Sogndal, by the Sognefjord in the western part of Norway. Key research areas are ICT, regional development, tourism and climate change. The institute has been involved in a series of EU programmes since the beginning of the 1990s. WNRI is a regional partner in the SABER prosject interested in exploring satellite as means of achieving 100% broadband coverage. WNRI has since 2002 been the secretariat for the Sogn og Fjordane regional broadband forum and since 1995 for the regional Sogn og Fjordane IT forum. These fora comprise regional and local level private and public sector organisations involved in planning, implementation and evaluation of ICT strategies and initiatives including broadband initiatives. These organisations also include Sogn og Fjordane County Council which is responsible for regional strategies and funding. The region developed and agreed on a new regional broadband strategy plan in 2011. WNRI was responsible for developing the plan. WNRI is also the secretariat for a new national broadband council covering 10 regions in Norway.
