The mission of the Institute for the Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA) is the development of methodologies and technologies for acquisition, processing, fusion and interpretation of images and data obtained by electromagnetic sensors operating on satellite, aircraft and in situ, aimed at monitoring environment and territory, at non-invasive diagnostic and at electromagnetic risk assessment. The Institute has consolidated expertise in the fields of optical and microwave remote sensing.

IREA researchers use remote sensing techniques for environmental studies and for pattern recognition tasks, especially automatic interpretation methods of aerial and satellite imagery together with spatial data infrastructures for EO data. Services provided by the Institute concern following sectors: •Land monitoring: inland /near coastal waters and vegetated ecosystems (wetland, forest, natural vegetation and agriculture); •Alpine glacier and snow monitoring; •Geo-Lithological Mapping; •Spatial data Infrastructure (SDI) and Sensor Observation Service (SOS); •Anthropic risks, oil spill, sea and inland water quality. CNR IREA has recent or current research contracts funded by National Research Council, ESA, ASI, EC FP7, Italian Government and business (energy sector). CNR IREA Unit of Milano participated in GEOLAND and it is still working in GEOLAND2 within the NARMA, Core Information Service for Africa. It also coordinates the DORIS_Net project and hosts Lombardia GMES Regional Contact Office
