Devon County Council is working jointly with Somerset County Council to deliver a comprehensive Programme known as 'Connecting Devon and Somerset' to improve broadband connectivity across the Devon and Somerset Area. Our combined Area has over 2 million citizens and nearly 1 million premises; many of which are located in rural areas with difficult terrain or areas of outstanding natural beauty and this therefore makes terrestrial delivery of broadband very challenging. Devon is the third largest Administration area in the UK and Somerset the 13th largest area.

To this end, Devon County Council is delivering a pilot satellite broadband project to provide better broadband speeds to some specific rural isolated communities in upland areas along its border with Somerset. To date around 100 satellite receivers have been deployed and over 100 small businesses/community people have been given practical IT tuition to improve people's experience of using IT/broadband. This is a relatively small project (500,000 euros) compared with the larger Connecting Devon and Somerset project (contract value of circa 90 million euros), which will deliver a mix of techinologies (fibre, fixed line copper and satellite services), over the next 3 -4 years.
